- Senior advocate KK Venugopal's tenure as Attorney General for India has been extended for another three months or till further orders, whichever is earlier.
- KK Venugopal was appointed as the Attorney General for India in June 2017. His term was ending on 30 June 2022. Now he will be the Attorney General for 3 months.
About Attorney General of India:-
- The Attorney General of India is the Chief Legal Adviser to the Government of India and its principal advocate before the Supreme Court of India.
- They are appointed by the President of India on the advice of the Union Cabinet under Article 76(1) of the Constitution and hold office during the pleasure of the President.
- He should be a person eligible to be appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court. Therefore, he must have been a judge of a High Court for five years, an advocate of a High Court for ten years, or, in the opinion of the President, an eminent jurist.
- The 15th and current Attorney General is KK Venugopal. He was reappointed by President Ram Nath Kovind in 2020. He started his service on 30 June 2017.
