What is the Goods and Services Tax (GST)?

  • The Goods and Services Tax (GST) is an indirect tax (or consumption tax) used on the supply of goods and services in India. It is a comprehensive, multilevel, destination-based tax: comprehensive because it includes almost all indirect taxes except some state taxes.
  • Goods and services are divided into five different tax slabs for tax collection: 0%, 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%.
  • However, petroleum products, alcoholic beverages and electricity are not taxed under GST and are instead taxed separately by individual state governments as per the previous tax system.
